Almost every house in this region has a basement, a good share of them are finished, and plenty of them have taken water at least once. Four vinyl products, and how we pick between them
Vinyl is not one product. It covers four different constructions that behave differently underfoot and on the invoice. Erik sorts it out during the in-home measure by looking at your subfloor, the room in question, and how hard the floor is going to get used. A slab basement in Hazelwood and a second-floor bathroom in a 1920s Kirkwood Tudor are not the same problem, and they rarely take the same product.

Hardwood is beautiful and we install plenty of it, but wood moves with the humidity we get here and it does not forgive standing water. Tile is hard on dropped dishes and cold in February. Vinyl sits in the middle: quiet, warm enough to walk barefoot, and easy to clean after a winter of salt and slush coming off the driveway. It is also the only one of the three we will put in a finished basement without a list of conditions attached.
It goes down over almost anything, too - a concrete slab, plywood over joists, and in some cases the tile or vinyl already sitting there. That matters on the 1960s and 70s ranches and split-levels in places like Florissant, where tearing out a glued-down floor can cost more than the new material. Less demolition means a shorter project, less dust in the house, and a smaller number at the bottom of the quote.
How we put it in
Vinyl looks easy to install, which is why we get called out to fix so much of it. Flat subfloor first: we grind the high spots and skim the low ones, because a rigid plank bridges a dip and clicks apart later. Then expansion gaps at every wall, transitions cut to fit the doorway instead of a strip jammed over the gap, stair nosings matched to the plank, and your baseboards pulled and reset rather than caulked over. Vinyl Flooring - frequently asked questions
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons we sell it. Rigid-core vinyl does not absorb water, so a lower level that takes an inch can be pumped out, dried, and walked on again. Fix the source first - the sump, the grading, the window well - because the vinyl protects the floor, not the drywall or the boxes stored against it.
Laminate has a wood-fiber core, so a puddle left sitting can swell it at the seams. Vinyl has a plastic or stone-composite core and does not care. Laminate is a little harder on the surface and usually costs less per square foot, which makes it fair for upstairs bedrooms and hallways. Below grade or anywhere near plumbing, we put in vinyl every time.
A quality wear layer with UV protection holds its color for years. The cheap stuff sold by the pallet does not, and a sunroom or a wide west-facing window will show it inside two or three summers. We do not stock the bottom of the market, and we will tell you which lines on the showroom rack handle direct sun best before you pick one.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
