In a room, laminate floats. On stairs it cannot. Every tread gets construction adhesive plus hidden fasteners behind the nosing, riser caps are glued and clamped, and the joints are finished with color-matched caulk so nothing opens up when the house dries out in January. Done properly a laminate staircase stays quiet, holds its edge and reads as hardwood to anyone who is not down on their hands and knees looking for the seam.
We handle the removal too. Old carpet, pad, staples and tack strip come off first, and any loose tread gets screwed down while the stairs are still bare. Flights in O'Fallon and the St. Charles County subdivisions are usually builder-grade pine under the original carpet, which takes laminate well once the treads are leveled and the overhang is squared up.

AC4 and AC5 boards are rated for commercial floor traffic, which is harder duty than a household staircase ever sees. On stairs they routinely outlast carpet and hold their own against hardwood. The failure point is almost never the plank, it is a nosing that was not fastened properly, which is why we glue and pin every one of them.
Yes, when we run both. Same plank, same order, same lot number, and the nosing comes from the same manufacturer so the print and the sheen line up. If your floor is already down and we are only doing the stairs, bring a spare board to our Maryland Heights showroom and we will match it off the rack.
About the same as a satin-finished hardwood stair. Socks on any hard tread will slide. We can set discreet anti-slip strips just under the nosing edge if there is an older relative in the house or a dog that takes the stairs at speed. It is a small add and worth asking about at the measure.
Usually. We pull the carpet, check every tread for movement, level the ones that need it and install right on top of the existing staircase. There is no reason to tear out sound framing. If a tread is cracked or badly worn we replace that one piece, and the estimator will flag it before you commit to anything.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
