Veteran Flooring is a veteran-owned shop with a showroom on Weldon Parkway in Maryland Heights, and hardwood is the work we get called for most. We install solid and engineered wood in century-old brick homes in the city, in postwar Capes across the inner-ring suburbs, and in new construction west of the river. Missouri weather is hard on wood. Summer dew points sit in the 70s and winters run dry, so boards swell through August and shrink back by February. We acclimate material inside your house before a single plank goes down, take a moisture reading on the subfloor, and leave the expansion gaps the manufacturer calls for. Which build belongs in your house
Both options are real wood. The question is how the board is put together and what sits under it. Older St. Louis homes are joisted, with a plywood or old pine subfloor over a basement, which is ideal for nail-down solid wood. Newer builds out in St. Charles County are often slab-on-grade, and that is engineered territory. We look at the structure first and let it make the call instead of letting a showroom display do it.

Red and white oak run this market. Most homes around here were built with oak strip flooring, so matching new wood to old is usually straightforward. Maple reads cleaner and more uniform. Hickory takes a beating from dogs and kids without showing much. Walnut goes darker and warmer for a study or a formal dining room. Our racks carry Hallmark Floors, Portercraft and Fusion, and samples go home with you rather than staying bolted to a display.
Stain is where people slow down, and we are fine with that. Erik will sit on your floor with three or four stains, brush them out on the actual wood, and let them dry while you look at them in morning light and again after dinner. Kitchen light and late afternoon sun change a color more than any brochure admits. Homeowners mention that hour in their reviews more than anything else we do.
Installation, start to finish
We pull the old flooring, haul it away, and check the subfloor for flatness and moisture before anything new goes in. Squeaky joists get screwed down. Low spots get leveled. Baseboards come off and go back on so you are not left with quarter round hiding a rough cut. Nail-down, glue-down or float depends on what is underneath. If your existing wood only needs sanding and fresh coats, we will say so, because refinishing is often the better and cheaper answer.
Homeowners in Webster Groves, Kirkwood and University City call us most often about oak that has been buried under carpet since the seventies. Pulling that carpet back is usually the best half hour of the whole job. We tell you honestly whether the wood underneath is worth saving or whether replacement makes more sense, and then we put one written number on it.

Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
A whole main level usually runs two to four days for a straight install. Add a couple of days if we are sanding and finishing on site. We work in zones where the layout allows, so you keep a bathroom and a bed to get to, and we send photos at the end of each day so you know where things stand without having to ask.
Kitchens, yes, with either build, as long as spills get wiped up. Basements are a different story. Below grade, concrete gives off moisture year round, so we put engineered wood or a waterproof plank down there and keep solid hardwood on the levels above. We have seen too many solid floors cup in a basement to recommend otherwise.
A solid oak floor over a sound subfloor can go eighty years and take five or six sandings along the way. Engineered runs thirty to fifty years and will usually take one or two sandings, depending on the wear layer thickness. Either way you are buying decades, not seasons.
Usually within a shade or two, and we bring boards to your house to prove it before anything gets ordered. If the old and the new sit in the same sightline, the cleaner fix is sanding everything at once and finishing it as one floor. We price it both ways so the decision is yours.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
