Stair carpet measured and installed by our own crew
Stairs take more abuse per square foot than anything else in a house, and they are the one place a sloppy install shows immediately. A wandering seam at the nosing, carpet that pulls off the riser after one winter, a tread that still moves under the new pad. Veteran Flooring runs stair work with the same crew that does the floors, so the layout, the padding, the tack strip and the finish detail are all one person's responsibility.
We do waterfall wraps, upholstered Hollywood installs, French cap corners on open sides and custom-bound runners with the tape matched to your trim. Landings, winders and pie-shaped turns are routine here. When the stairs connect two floors that are getting new carpet anyway, we run the whole job together so the color and the dye lot match from top to bottom.

Full carpet or a bound runner
Wall-to-wall covers tread and riser edge to edge. It is the quietest option, the warmest underfoot, and the easiest to keep clean because there is no exposed wood shoulder collecting dust and scuffs. In a house with dogs it is usually the right call, since full-width traction beats a strip of carpet with slick oak on either side of it.
A runner leaves wood showing on both sides and suits the older city staircases where the treads are worth looking at. Runners come 27 or 32 inches wide with bound or serged edges, held with rods or hidden fasteners depending on the look you are after. On a painted-riser staircase a runner is often the cheaper of the two as well.
- Low-pile nylon - our default where a family uses the stairs a dozen times a day
- Wool and wool blends - the classic runner look on a century-old staircase
- Solution-dyed polyester - forgiving with pets and easy to clean hard
- Custom binding and serging to pick up the trim color or the wall color
- Darker textures for the flight off a garage or side door, where salt and slush land first

See financing optionsWhy a lot of houses here keep the stairs soft
Wood stairs photograph beautifully. They are also loud, slick in socks and unforgiving when a phone goes down them. Carpet takes the edge off all three. It muffles the thud of kids coming down at seven in the morning, gives an older parent something with grip, and gives a dog traction instead of a scramble. Plenty of clients refinish the floors and keep the stairs carpeted. If you want the opposite, we build hardwood staircases too, and we will tell you which suits your house.

How we do the work
The old carpet, pad, staples and tack strip come off first and we look at the bare stairs. Loose treads get screwed and glued, from above or from below if the basement ceiling is open, because a squeak covered by new carpet is still a squeak. Then fresh eight-pound pad, new tack strip on every tread and riser, and the carpet stretched tight with seams heat-bonded. A standard flight in a Kirkwood two-story takes most of a day.

Per-stair pricing in Greater St. Louis
Stair carpet is quoted by the tread, materials and labor together. Most houses in this area have thirteen to sixteen stairs in a flight, plus a landing.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard nylon, wall-to-wall wrap | $60 - $85 per stair | The common choice for a family staircase |
| Pet-grade solution-dyed carpet | $80 - $105 per stair | Traction underfoot and easy cleanup |
| Bound wool or wool-blend runner | $110 - $150 per stair | Custom edge binding included |
| Berber loop | $70 - $95 per stair | Durable, though not with cats in the house |
Landings, winders and open sides add labor and get counted at the measure. Removing the existing surface is already in the written quote.
Carpet Stairs - frequently asked questions
A low, dense twist in nylon, or solution-dyed polyester in the same construction. Stairs wear at the nosing, where every foot in the house lands on the same inch of fiber, so pile height is the enemy. Deep plush looks great for a season and then crushes into a shiny line on every step. We bring samples to the in-home measure so you can feel the difference.
Carpet hides a squeak, it does not cure one. We fix the stairs while they are bare: screws into loose treads, glue and shims into open joints, and a look at the stringers if the whole flight moves. That work happens before the pad goes down and it is written into the quote, not added later as a surprise.
Yes. If the treads are solid we install without stapling through the face of the wood, so the boards come out of it intact. Older homes around here often have perfectly good oak treads sitting under a 1980s carpet. We take a look at the measure and tell you honestly what is under there before you decide.
Stairs alone are fine and we do them regularly. It is a half day to a full day of work for one crew, and it makes a bigger visual difference than most people expect. Plenty of the homeowners who reviewed us hired us for a single flight first and called back later for the rest of the house.
