Real wood over a core that does not move
Engineered hardwood is a genuine wood face, usually oak but also maple, hickory or walnut, bonded to a cross-layered core underneath. Underfoot you cannot tell it from solid wood. The difference shows up in August, when the air is thick and a solid board wants to swell. The core holds the plank flat. That stability is why we put engineered in finished basements, over slabs, in kitchens, and anywhere radiant heat runs beneath the floor.
It also opens up widths that solid wood cannot do safely in this climate. Seven and eight inch planks in a great room look nothing like three inch strip, and engineered gets you there without gapping every winter. Where engineered earns its keep
Most calls we get for engineered come down to one of two things: concrete, or humidity. Both are everyday facts of life in this market, and neither one is worth fighting with the wrong product on the floor. A basement in Florissant and a slab-built great room in Wentzville are different rooms with the same underlying problem, and this is the material that answers both of them. Here is where it earns the money.
- Finished basements and slab-on-grade builds, where a nailed solid floor has nothing to hold onto
- Over radiant heat, where the core tolerates the daily temperature cycle without gapping
- Wide planks from five to nine inches, in rooms where narrow strip would read busy
- Factory finishes with aluminum oxide in them, which handle shoe grit and winter salt at the entry doors
- Kitchens and back halls, where the occasional spill gets wiped up. If water is a constant, luxury vinyl plank is the honest recommendation instead of wood.

Oak still outsells everything, European white oak most of all, and it takes the soft wire-brushed finishes people keep asking for. Maple stays pale and even. Hickory swings light to dark inside the same box and hides scratches well. Walnut goes deep brown and quiet. Wear layer is the number that actually matters: three millimeters or thicker and the floor can be sanded again someday, thinner than that and it is a recoat floor for life.
Finish is the other half of the decision. Matte hides dust and dog prints, satin has a little more life in it. Wire-brushed and hand-scraped textures forgive a busy household. We hand you four or five boards, you live with them on your own floor for a few days, and then we order. That unhurried part of the process is what shows up over and over in our Google reviews.
Subfloor first, then a method
Before we quote a method, we test. Concrete gets a moisture reading and a flatness check with a long straightedge, because slabs in newer subdivisions around Chesterfield and Wildwood are rarely as flat as people assume. Plywood gets checked for squeaks and deflection. Then we recommend glue-down, float or nail-down based on what is genuinely under there. Glue-down feels solid and quiet, which is why we use it over slab. Floating goes faster and comes back up easier if a section ever needs work.
The quote covers baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions into tile or carpet, undercutting the door casings, and hauling the old floor away. Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
It depends entirely on the wear layer. Three millimeters or more and you get one or two sandings, using the same process we run on solid wood floors. One or two millimeters and the right move is a screen and recoat, which freshens the surface without cutting into the veneer. We measure before quoting anything.
No. Water resistant, which is not the same thing. A dropped glass or a dog bowl that tips over is nothing to worry about. A dishwasher line that runs all weekend will still ruin it. In a basement that has taken water before, we will steer you to a waterproof product rather than sell you a wood floor that fails.
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons people choose it here. We follow the manufacturer limits on surface temperature, bring the system up slowly before installing, and let the material acclimate in the room first. Skip any of that and you get gaps in January and cupping the following July.
Over concrete we glue, almost always. It feels solid, it is quieter, and it removes any chance of a hollow spot underfoot. Over plywood either method works. Floating installs faster and is simpler to open up later for a repair. We pick based on your subfloor and explain why, not based on which is quicker for us.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
