The part of a tile floor nobody sees
A tile floor is only as good as what sits underneath it. Before any mortar goes down we check the subfloor for deflection, flatten the low spots, and set an uncoupling membrane over wood subfloors so seasonal movement never reaches your grout lines. Most older homes here sit on joists over a basement, and that flex is what cracks tile two winters later. On the newer slab builds we tile in St. Charles, the prep looks different, but it starts the same way: flat, clean, and tested for moisture.
We set ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass and mosaic tile - floors, showers, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds and commercial spaces. Samples sit on the racks at our Maryland Heights showroom so you can carry a tile to the window and see the color in real daylight instead of under store lighting. Dale started this company in 2015, and tile has been steady work ever since, mostly because St. Louis homeowners want one floor in the entry that can take a winter without complaining.
Where tile earns its keep in a St. Louis home
Winter here means salt, grit and slush riding in on boots from the driveway, and that mix chews through most floor finishes in a few seasons. Tile does not care. Summers swing the other way, with dew points in the seventies and finished basements holding damp air, which is where a dense tile and a sealed grout line keep doing their job. Kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and mudrooms are where we install the most of it, in that order.

Layout comes first. We dry-lay the field, find the center lines, and move the pattern so the cut pieces land somewhere sensible instead of a sliver at the doorway. Mortar gets picked for the tile size, large pieces get back-buttered for full coverage, and leveling clips hold everything flat while it cures. Lippage is the difference between a floor that looks installed and a floor that looks built, and it comes down to that step being done patiently.
Grout goes in once the mortar has cured, not the same afternoon, and we seal it before we leave unless you have gone with epoxy. Then we walk the floor with you, corner to corner, and fix anything you point at. Tile Flooring - frequently asked questions
Plan on three days for a typical kitchen floor. Day one is demo and prep, day two is setting tile, day three is grout and cleanup. You can walk on it the day after grout goes in. Showers and large-format floors add a day or two, because the layout work and the cuts take longer, and we would rather take the extra day than rush the mortar coverage.
Over plywood, yes. Wood subfloors in St. Louis homes move with the seasons - they swell in August humidity and shrink in January - and rigid tile bonded straight to that movement is how grout cracks. The uncoupling membrane lets the wood do its thing without dragging the tile along with it. Over a sound concrete slab it is optional, though we still use it in wet rooms.
Sometimes. If the old tile is solidly bonded, reasonably flat, and the added height will not trap your doors or leave a lip at the carpet, we can set over it. More often the old floor comes out, because starting flat is worth more than the saved demo day. We check it during the estimate and tell you which way we would go and why.
Cement grout picks up stains if it is left unsealed, so we seal every floor before we leave. In kitchens and showers you can upgrade to epoxy grout, which never needs sealing and does not darken. If you go with natural stone, the stone itself needs sealing on its own schedule, and we will tell you exactly what that looks like before you buy it.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
