Pull up the carpet in a South City bungalow or a Tower Grove two-flat and there is usually red oak underneath, laid in two-and-a-quarter inch strips sometime between 1900 and 1940. Builders here used oak because it was cheap and local, and they nailed it down over solid joists. A century later most of those floors still have enough thickness left to sand. That is the single biggest reason hardwood is the default floor in this city.

Hardwood also suits how these houses are laid out. Long center halls, wide wood casing, pocket doors and rooms that open into each other all read better with one continuous wood floor than with a change of material every twelve feet. It handles traffic from a front door that opens straight onto Kingshighway or Gravois, and it takes winter salt and grit better than most people expect once the finish is done properly.

City homes are joisted over a basement, and after a hundred years those joists are rarely flat. We check for deflection, squeaks, cupped boards and old water damage around radiator lines and bathroom walls before we quote. Where the original subfloor is diagonal one-by planking, we usually add plywood underlayment so the new flooring has something solid to hold a fastener. That work goes in the written price, not into a surprise conversation mid-job.

Humidity is the other half of it. St. Louis summers push dew points into the seventies and winter forced air dries a house right out, so wood expands and contracts every single year. We let material acclimate inside the house before installation, hold the correct expansion gap at every wall, and tell you plainly to keep indoor humidity somewhere between thirty-five and fifty-five percent. Slight gapping in January and tight boards in August are normal for this climate.

On install days the crew protects the path in, tears out the old flooring, preps the subfloor, then lays and fastens the new wood. On refinishing jobs we sand with dust containment, test stains on your own boards in your own light, and let you choose before anything is committed. Coats go on with cure time between them. We walk the finished floor with you room by room, and if something needs another visit we come back.
